[The sounds of paper being carefully, methodically ripped from a book one page at a time, as if trying to preserve it. Shiori "grrrr"s slightly in the background, gnawing on something.]

Hey, don't eat that chapter.

Here.

Eat that one. I die in that one.

Alright.

[Private/Unhackable]

You sure?

I've come to terms with the fact that I die.

But it's still hard accepting that my friends do as well.

Don't worry about it. I'm sure it works out for the best in the end. [He refuses to tell Maes that by some miracle he revives. It seems unfair to Maes who stays dead.]

After all...this series has to end happily ever after for someone, right?

I'm not worried about it; I can't change it. But it's still discouraging.

Yes.

I took on someone I could not win against. In my line of work, it was bound to happen sooner or later. It's not discouraging, just...reality.

It could be worse! You could run headlong into a trap, knowing it was a trap, and being stupid enough to think you could beat it because you knew.

I usually get bailed out of those.

We both did what we had to do. And we're here now to do what we can do with this time, too. Right?

I'm sure Roy would have bailed me out if I'd stopped to tell anyone what I was doing.

Right.

Ah. Roy needs to work on his Maes-senses, then... Or maybe that's just a ninja thing.

I think Roy wants to not work on his Maes-senses, because they show him lots of pictures of Elysia.

And that is the problem with Roy. He doesn't properly appreciate the finer things in life.

Exactly!

Like Miss Hawkeye. He appreciates some, but is so used to being stuffy and annoyed that he can't think about what it might mean to be happy.

Maybe we just have to loosen him up.

Or show him what he'll lose out on if he doesn't?

If you're planning on giving him some of your books to help him see what he might be missing out on, you'll need to be very, very certain they don't fall into little hands. There are... I'm not sure. But I think there are four of them running around now. I believe we shipped Fletcher back to his brother now that they remember each other.

Or are you talking about something else?

Something else entirely.

As funny as that first idea might be, I'd kind of like to keep your daughter and my books separated indefinitely.

That and I hear Roy likes flames. ...My books don't.

My idea was more along the lines of...well, Roy's always had Riza's attention and loyalty, without question, right?

Me too.

Very good point. I don't like flames either.

Yes. You're suggesting... jealousy? Find a way to make him wonder and want?

Nor do I, really.

Pretty much, yeah. It works in the books I read, after all. Besides...I get the feeling the Colonel is the kind of man who hasn't had, or at least hasn't noticed, any worthy competition before. If it's too easy for him, maybe he doesn't see how much happier he could be outside of his comfort zone?

So we need to give him good competition that he believes, but someone who isn't actually going to try to win over the Lieutenant.

Right. Wherein lies the trouble. We can't exactly go about setting up just anyone with the Lieutenant: she's a very attractive woman in her own right and might actually find herself with another suitor on her hands, and she's also a very particular woman. It's not like we can expect, say, Kevin to look like a viable choice for her interest.

...This place has such limited resources for our needs sometimes. [He sighs]

And she might shoot someone if they get too annoying. Though she didn't shoot Sirius! That was a good sign! I wonder... what about Jiraiya? If he writes it, he has to know how it works!

Ah, yeah... She can be a little testy sometimes.

Sirius is definitely off limits; trust me. As for Jiraiya, uh...sure, I guess. Does she go for older, perverted men? I suppose he could tone it back, though, for a good cause.

She's even yelled at me before!

Of course, he's too young. Unless you've got other reasons for that. I don't know what she goes for; Miss Hawkeye has never had an active dating life. I've studied up on it.
